If you did not hear this yesterday, ESPN’s Rob Parker called RGIII a “cornball” brother on First Take,:
Personally, I was totally shocked that an educated black man would go to that level of subjectivity. For a black figure in sports that is trying not to be defined by his race, but by what he can accomplish, you would think blacks would be proud of that. We would commend him and America for the strides we have made as a nation to not judge someone based on skin color.
RGIII is a tremendous talent and a great person that everyone in DC loves. Yes he is black, but that does not totally define who he is as person. He wants to be considered the best QB ever, and be compared not only to the black QB’s in the past, but the great white QB’s to. What is wrong with that? He just wants to be the greatest, regardless of color. Why does that make him a “cornball” brother?
However, in our society (African American), we still have others that continue to try to bring us down. We continue to move backwards because we do not lift our successful brothers and sisters up. There seems to be some spite when the person doesn’t embrace being “black” or act “hip” or “ghetto” like most blacks in our society. Yea I said it and that is just plain stupid!
We have grown to different heights to still have that dumb mentality. We are educated, articulate, and intelligent so don’t subject yourselves to fitting in with the so called “norm.” Be great despite your color, that is what America has allowed!
Rob Parker should be fired from ESPN immediately for these outlandish comments. You would think African Americans that have had success would understand how crazy these comments are and how much we have moved past that attitude. I never really liked him anyway because he always seems to bring up race when he is on TV. Sometimes it is good to talk about, but when you talk about it too much it could be uncomfortable. What are your thoughts?
