Who is the R.O.Y.

The hot topic of the week is which rookie has been the most impressive this year. I can say that this is one of the first times that I remember that 3 rookie quarterbacks have been this impressive as rookies and possible MVP candidates for their team. Andrew Luck, Robert Griffin III, and Russell Wilson have all defied expectations for their team and could all be in the playoffs. But who is the rookie of the year?

Andrew Luck and RGIII went number 1 and 2 in the draft so they have been compared all year. One week Luck looks great, the next Griffin.

For Andrew Luck, no one expected his team to be as good as they are (10-5) and to have a spot in the playoffs, especially after only winning 2 games last year. He has inspired this team to play well, a long with playing hard for coach Chuck Pagano, and with the offense on his back, he is proving he can handle the pressure in the NFL. Of course he is not flawless, turning the ball over 18 or more times, but his team ask him to pass the ball more than any other rookie, so his stats may be deceiving even though passing for an all time rookie high of 4,183 passing yards is very impressive. Luck looks like a Hall of Fame quarterback in the future and has all the intangibles you want in your quarterback.

RGIII has been electric all year and has taken the NFL by storm. His play on the field has been efficient and effective (second in QBR in the NFL). As a threat running the ball, it has really opened up the passing game for the Redskins, and Griffin can really let it loose. Griffin has 3,852 combined rushing and passing yards with only 5 interceptions and 2 fumbles. Of course he got a little banged up because of the way he plays, but he is definitely the face of that Franchise and the reason they may go to the playoffs. RGIII is the most popular guy in the NFL right now with the most jersey sells. The Nation’s Capital and America loves this guy.

One guy who has gone under the radar until recently is 3rd round draft pick Russell Wilson. Wilson showed he could be a great player in college, but no one believe he would be as good in the NFL because of his height (5’10″). Well all except Seattle. He went into Seattle and stole a job away from a big free agent signing (Matt Flynn) and has never looked back. It has taken him a while to really control the reigns on his team but if you look at his resume, he has some big wins for his team against good competition  He beat the Packers, Patriots, Dallas, Chicago, and San Francisco. He has thrown for 25 TD’s (more than any other rookie QB and 1 shy from the rookie TD pass record), they are now 10-5, and are the team nobody wants to face in the playoffs. In the last 3 weeks, his team has out scored the competition 150-30 and mostly because of his play. Their defense has been tremendous all year, but the no they have opened the offense for Wilson and he is showing he could be the Rookie of the year as well.

To be honest, you cannot go wrong with either one of these quarterbacks  They all have been instrumental for their team and went above and beyond expectations. While these guys are the cream of the crop, the other young QB’s in the NFL have looked good as well as two young running backs Doug Martin and Alfred Morris. In fact Martin and Morris could be considered for rookie of the year as well, if this wasn’t a quarterback league. The future in the NFL is bright!

If I had to pick a winner for this years R.O.Y. I would pick RGIII by a slim margin, but it would be a great story if Russell Wilson wins. Who do you think should win this award?
